Chapter 2 - Biology

Studyguide

TermDefinition
Acid solutions that has more H+ than OH- are acidic (0-6)
Adhesion Attraction between water molecule and other surfaces
Anion A atom with more negative charges
Atom basic unit of matter
Atomic Number the number of protons in one atom of that element
Base
Buffer something that absorbs or releases H+ or OH- to keep pH level constant
Capillary Action example water attracted to the glass sides of a tube
Chemical Bond when atoms join together by sharing electrons or are pulled toegther by opposite charges
Chemical Reaction when two or more atoms bond together or break apart
Cohesion water molecules stick together (3)
Covalent Bond Formed from the sharing of a pair of valence electrons by two atoms
Electron have a negative charge (e-)
Electron Shell - first electron (1n) shell hold 2 eletrons - Second and third electron (2n) hold 8 electrons
Electron Transfer giving away or gain an electron
Electronegativity a property of each elements (level of attraction an atom has to its electrons)
Element O, Na, K, H, Zn, Ca, Cl, F, Fe, P, S, H, Mg, N
Evaporation
Functional Group group of atoms that gives special chemicals prperties to a molecules
Heat of vaporization of water liquid to gas
Hydrogen bond form between two polar molecules when the oppositely charged parts of the molecules are attracted to each other
Hydrophilic molecules that can disscolve in water
Hydrophobic cannot dissolve in water
Inert Gas nonreactive
Ion when atom loses or gains an electron (becomes charged)
Ionic Bond form when two oppositely charged ions are attracted to each other
Isotope atom of one element that have differing numbers of neutrons
Mass number P + N =
Molecule two or more atoms held together by a chemical bond
Neutron have no charge
Nonpolar Covalent Bond electrons are shared equally
Nucleus (atomic) protons and neutrons
pH scale measure of acidic and basic
Polar Covalent Bond electrons are not shared equally
Product O + 2H
Proton positive charge
Reactant H2O
Solvent able to dissolve other substance
Surface Tension ability of the hydrogen bond between water molecules at the surface to avoid breaking
Valence Shell The outermost electron shell with at least one electron

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
