Scientific Method

TermDefinition
hypothesis A scientific explanation for an observation that can be tested by further investigation. An "If...Then" statement
scientific method steps followed to solve problems: collecting data, formulating & testing a hypothesis, & stating conclusions.
independent variable The variable that is being changed (manipulated) by the experimenter
dependent variable The variable that reacts (responds) to what you have changed (manipulated).
constant A variable that is not changed in an experiment
results data and observations gathered from the experiment
control The part of the experiment that receives no treatment and is used as a standard of comparison
data Any pieces of information acquired through observation or experimentation
graph A diagram that shows how two variables are related
observations Data collected using your senses and/or instrumentation
inference Conclusion based on observations and past experience.
quantitative data Observation that measures such things as size, weight, distance, volume, etc. This observation MUST use a number.
qualitative data Observation that describes using details such as size, color, shape. This observation uses NO numbers.
repeated trials Conducting an experiment multiple times to get the most accurate data possible
circle graph A data display used to show data as a percentage of the whole
bar graph A data display used to compare categories (where one variable is a number and the other is a category)
line graph A data display comparing two variables that are numbers. Shows change over a period of time.
