Lab Safety Rules

TermDefinition
Lab safety guideline 1 Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory. No horseplay of any kind will be tolerated.
Lab safety guideline 2 Do your share of the lab; do not rely on your lab partner to do all of the work. Before starting the lab, work out a way to share the responsibilities. d
Lab safety guideline 3 When first entering a science room, do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials in the laboratory area until you are instructed to do so. The lab also has many items in storage; do NOT poke around in cabinets or drawers.
Lab safety guideline 4 Read instructions carefully. Many questions you might have are answered in your lab handout. Do not skip steps, follow the directions in the order they are given. Do not eat or drink in the lab. EVER.
Lab safety guideline 5 Do not eat or drink in the lab. EVER.
Lab safety guideline 6 You may be required to wear safety goggles - usually when chemicals or glassware are involved.
Lab safety guideline 7 Keep your area clean and free of clutter. Backpacks should be left in your locker or stored at the front of the lab where no one will trip over them. Leave your lab table the way you found it.
Lab safety guideline 8 Do not wander around the room, distract other students, startle other students or interfere with the laboratory experiments of others. Stay in your assigned area; do not “visit” your friends on the other side of the lab.
Lab safety guideline 9 Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment including: first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and fire blanket. Know where the fire exits are located.
Lab safety guideline 10 Report any accident (spill, breakage, etc.) or injury (cut, burn, etc.) to the teacher.
Lab safety guideline 11 All chemicals in the laboratory are to be considered dangerous. Avoid handling chemicals with fingers. Always use tweezers. Never taste any chemicals (even if it seems safe) in the lab.
Lab safety guideline 12 Never remove equipment, chemicals, or specimens from the lab, unless you are given permission.
Slideshow Rule 1 Never mix chemicals (or perform tests) without your teacher’s permission.
Slideshow Rule 2 Keep your work area clean and keep all materials (clothing, hair, papers, etc.) away from a flame or heat source.
Slideshow Rule 3 Never run or push someone else in the lab. This rule applies at all times
Slideshow Rule 4 Never reach across a flame.
Slideshow Rule 5 Never look directly into a test tube when mixing or heating chemicals.
Slideshow Rule 6 Always point a test tube away from you and others when heating it over a flame or other heat source.
Slideshow Rule 7 Never smell a chemical directly from the container. Wave your hand over the opening of the container and “waft” the fumes toward your nose.
Slideshow Rule 8 Never taste a chemical unless you are instructed by your teacher to do so.
Slideshow Rule 9 Never use broken or chipped glassware.
Slideshow Rule 10 Keep lids on bottles and containers when not in use.
Slideshow Rule 11 Wash you hands before and after each experiment.
