6.6 A Pure Substances, Solutions, and Mixtures
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Compound | A substance composed of two or more elements whose atoms are bonded in a specific ratio |
| Dissolve | To break a substance (solute) into tiny particles when surrounded by another substance's (solvent) particles to form a solution |
| Element | A substance made of only one type of atom |
| Heterogeneous Mixture | A mixture that does not have a uniform composition |
| Homogeneous Mixture | A mixture that has a uniform composition; it’s also known as a solution |
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Physical Property | Any characteristic of matter that can be observed or measured without a change in its chemical composition |
| Pure Substance | Matter made of only one type of particle: an element or a compound |
| Solution | A mixture that has a uniform composition; it’s also known as a homogeneous mixture |
