6.6 A Pure Substances, Solutions, and Mixtures

Compound A substance composed of two or more elements whose atoms are bonded in a specific ratio
Dissolve To break a substance (solute) into tiny particles when surrounded by another substance's (solvent) particles to form a solution
Element A substance made of only one type of atom
Heterogeneous Mixture A mixture that does not have a uniform composition
Homogeneous Mixture A mixture that has a uniform composition; it’s also known as a solution
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Physical Property Any characteristic of matter that can be observed or measured without a change in its chemical composition
Pure Substance Matter made of only one type of particle: an element or a compound
Solution A mixture that has a uniform composition; it’s also known as a homogeneous mixture
