Week 3 Key Terms

TermDefinition
Hemostasis Process of controlled clotting resulting in localized clotting in damaged blood vessels to prevent excessive blood loss while continuing perfusion to all other areas.
Perfusion Total arterial blood flow through the tissues (peripheral perfusion) and blood flow that is pumped by the heart (central perfusion.)
Petechiae Reddish-purple pinpoint hemorrhagic lesions on the skin (mostly around the face)
Anemia Reduction of the number of the RBC's, the amount of hemoglobin, or the hematocrit.
Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) Clotting disorder causing thrombosis and hemorrhage
Leukemia Blood cancer with uncontrolled production of immature WBC's in the bone marrow.
leukopenia Reduction in WBC's
Neutropenia Lower than normal neutrophils in the blood
Pancytopenia deficiency of RBC, WBC and platelets
Sickle Cell Disease Genetic DO with a mutation in the gene for the beta chains of hemoglobin that causes, chronic anemia, pain, disability, organ damage, increased risk for infection, and early death as a result of poor blood perfusion
thrombocytopenia reduction in the amount of circulating platelets from reduced platelet production
