TermDefinition
Environment All living and nonliving things in an ecosystem in which organisms interact
Environmental Science The study of how the natural world works
Environmentalism A social movement dedicated to protecting the natural world - and, by extension, people - from undesirable changes brought about by human actions
Natural Resources Materials, and energy sources found in nature, that humans need to survive
Renewable Natural Resources Resources that are naturally replenished and regenerate
Nonrenewable Natural Resources Resources that are not naturally replenished and regenerate slowly, if at all.
Sustainable A resource with the ability to continue being used at the same rate into the foreseeable future.
Fossil Fuels Nonrenewable energy sources, such as coal, oil, and natural gas.
Ecological Footprint The environmental effects of an individual or population in terms of the total amount of water and land required
[CHAPTER 2 BEGINNING] - Hypothesis A testable idea that attempts to explain a phenomenon or answer a scientific question
Prediction Specific statements about what we would expect to observe if the hypotheses are true
Independent Variable A variable in which the scientists manipulates
Dependent Variable The quantity of algae that results, the one that depends on the conditions set in the experiment
Controlled Studies Where all variables are controlled except one, allowing scientists to be more confident that any differences observed were caused by the factor they are investigating
Data Records and information a scientist collects within their studies
Peer Review After handing in a manuscript, several scientists specializing in the same subject review the paper
Theories Broader explanations that apply to a wider range of situations and observations
Ethics A branch of philosophy that involves the study of behavior: good or bad, right or wrong.
Environmental Ethics the application of ethical standards to relationships between humans and their environment
