Activity 1 Vocab

TermDefinition
Clinical Trials Tests run on human volunteers to show that a new medicine or device is both safe and effective. Clinical trials are run before the new medicine or device is approved for use by the public.
Data Information gathered from an experiment or observations.
Control In an experiment, a control is something held constant or unchanged to serve as a standard for comparison.
Placebo A fake treatment, like a sugar pill or a saline injection, given to some people in a scientific experiment. It's used as a control to see if a real treatment, like a new medicine, actually works.
Evidence Information that supports or refutes a claim.
Hypothesis A possible explanation for observations, facts, or events that may be tested by further investigation.
Inference A conclusion based on observations or what is already known.
Informed Consent In a clinical trial, when someone has been told about the possible risks involved in the trial and they agree to participate.
Observation Any description or measurement gathered by the senses or instruments.
Trade-off A desirable outcome given up to gain another desirable outcome.
