UNIT 1
8TH GRADE SCIENCE UNIT 1 CLASSIFICATION OF MATTER
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| chemical equation | equation that uses symbols and formulas to describe what happens in a chemical reaction |
| chemical reaction | reaction that occurs when one or more substances are converted to one or more different substances |
| product | resulting molecules in a chemical reaction |
| reactant | substances that react with each other to make something new |
| Law of Conservation of Mass | law stating that matter cannot be created or destroyed during chemical reactions |
| element | a pure substance that contains one type of atom and cannot be broken down into a simpler substance |
| atom | the basic unit of a chemical element |
| compound | a substance made of two or more chemical elements bonded to each other |
| pure substance | matter that has a definite composition; can be elements or compounds |
| molecule | a group of atoms chemically bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction (example: water H2O |
| mixture | matter that has a variable composition; can be heterogeneous or homogeneous |
| heterogeneous mixture | a mixture in which the components are not uniform and where different samples from the mixture are not identical to each other |
| homogeneous mixture | a mixture in which the components are uniformly distributed throughout and where the composition of the mixture is the same throughout |
| yield | to result in |
| photosynthesis | the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water |
| chemical equation for photosynthesis | 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + light energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ |
| Periodic Table | chart that lists all the known chemical elements |
