Intro to Anatomy
These are mainly vocab words
| Question/Vocab Words | Answer/Definition |
|---|---|
| Anatomy | Study of the structure of an organism |
| Physiology | Study of the function of a structure |
| What are the levels of organization? | Atoms, Molecules, Macro molecules, Organelles, Cells, Tissue, Organs, Organ System, Organism |
| Superior | A body part located above another |
| Inferior | A body part is located below another |
| Anterior | A body part is located towards the front |
| Posterior | A body part is located towards the back |
| Medial | A body part is located closer to an imaginary, vertical midline of the body |
| Lateral | A body part is located further from the middle |
| Proximal | A body part is located closer to the point of attachment |
| Distal | A body part is located farther from the point of attachment |
| Superficial | A body part is located near the surface |
| Deep | A body part is located away from the surface |
| Central | A body is situated at the center of the body |
| Peripheral | A body part is located away from the center of the body |
| Transverse Plane | Divides the body horizontally into superior or inferior positions |
| Sagittarius Plane | Cuts the body lengthwise into left and right portions |
| Frontal Plane | Divides the body lengthwise into anterior and posterior positions |
| What are the two major body cavities? | Ventral and Dorsal |
| What are the purposes of the body cavities? | Allows the organs to work independently of the body wall, Protects organs, allows easy chemical exchange between the organs and the rest of the body, and restricts the spread of disease; keeps it localized. |
| Homeostasis | Internal conditions remain constant despite external changes |
| Examples of Homeostasis | Blood PH=7.4, Blood temperature=98.6F/37C, Blood pressure=120/80,Blood glucose concentration=0.1% |
| How do negative feedback systems affect the affects of stimulus? | Lessens them |
| What do positive feedback systems do to the stimulus? | Enhances them |
| What is a disease? | An abnormal condition that interrupts homeostasis |
| Local Disease | Restricted to a specific part of the body ex. pneumonia, cancer |
| Systemic Disease | Affects many organs or entire body ex. AIDS, MS |
| Acute Disease | Sudden, onset, usually severe, lasts for a short time ex. Influenza, meningitis |
| Chronic Disease | Occurs gradually, not as severe, long term ex. diabetes, cancer |
