| percutaneous | pertaining to through the skin; implies movement through |
| transcutaneous | pertaining to through or across the skin; implies statically extending throughout the entire thickness of the skin |
| subcutaneous | pertaining to beneath the skin |
| necrosis | a condition of death of tissue or cells |
| necrotic | pertaining to death (of cells or tissues) |
| nosocomial | pertaining to hospitals; hospital-acquired, as in an infection acquired while in the hospital, e.g., nonsocomial infection |
| palliative | pertaining to a form of treatment which will relieve or alleviate symptoms without curing |
| parenchyma | the essential cells or tissues of an organ; the cells/tissue which carry out the essential functions of that organ |
| stroma | the framework of an organ, usually composed of connective tissue |
| paroxysmal | pertaining to sudden occurrence, such as a spasm or seizure |
| paracentesis | surgical puncture of a body cavity for fluid removal; umbrella term for all of the 'centesis' procedures |

| pathogenesis | the production of disease |
| pathological | pertaining to the study of disease |
| pathogenic | pertaining to the production of disease; disease producing |
| pathognomonic | distinctly characteristic or diagnostic of a specific condition or disease. e.g., exopthalmia is a pathognomonic of Grave's disease |
| peritoneal | pertaining to the serous membrane which surrounds most of the abdominal viscera |
| retroperitoneal | pertaining to behind the peritoneum, i.e., organs or structures lying behind (posterior to 0 the peritoneum |
| prodrome | to run before, i.e., prodromal symptoms appear before the actual illness and signal its onset |
| prolapse | to slide or sag forward or downward, as an organ doing this |
| purulent | containing pus |
| suppurative | pertaining to the formation or discharge of pus |
