WI-05 Water Treatment
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| preoxidation | a “prep step” where ozone or other chemicals are added to water to cut down on smells and junk, making later cleaning steps work better |
| ozone | a super-powered version of oxygen with three atoms (O₃). It breaks down unwanted stuff in water really fast |
| organic materials | bits that come from living things—like leaves, tiny organisms, or pollution from people |
| coagulation | special chemicals make dirt particles in water stick together into bigger pieces, kind of like magnets pulling them in |
| flocculation | when the water is gently mixed so those small clumps join up into bigger ones, called flocs |
| sedimentation | water sits in a tank and the heavy clumps (flocs) sink to the bottom, leaving the clearer water on top |
| filtration | water is strained through layers of sand, coal, or other materials, like a giant filter, to trap what’s still floating around |
| disinfection | water is treated with things like chlorine or UV light to kill germs and viruses, making it safe to drink |
