Matter

TermDefinition
matter anything that has mass and takes up space
particle a very small unit(piece) that makes up matter
classify to group, or sort
physical property characteristics that can be tested, measured or observed
mass the amount of matter in a material, in grams (1 paperclip = 1 gram)
volume the amount of three-dimensional space an object takes up or contains, in math volume = l x w x h
magnetism attraction to a magnet (INCS - iron, nickel, cobalt and steel)
thermal energy energy that is transferred from one substance to another as the result of a difference in temperature, the hotter the substance, the more its particles move
electric energy a form of energy produced by the flow of charged particles, such as electrons, through a conductor
conductor an object that ALLOWS energy to pass through
insulator an object that DOES NOT ALLOW energy to pass through
soluble dissolves in water
insoluble does NOT dissolve in water
ingredient a single part of a mixture
melt to change from a solid to a liquid state by heat
attract to pull towards
relative density whether matter sinks or floats in water
physical state whether matter is solid, liquid, or gas
solid a state of matter with a definite shape and a definite volume, and particles that are packed very close together
liquid a state of matter with a definite volume and NO definite shape, and particles that are close to each other but can slide past one another
gas a state of matter with NO definite shape and NO definite volume, and particles that are very spread out
mixture a combination of two or more materials that can be separated easily
solution a mixture where one thing dissolves completely into another, like sugar into water
dissolve to mix with a liquid until it becomes part of the liquid and you can't see it anymore because it has become evenly dispersed
evaporation to change from a liquid to a gas as a result of warming, creating vapor
maintain to keep, or to stay the same
conservation of matter the same amount of matter exists before and after the change, none is created or destroyed
expand an increase in the volume of a substance while the mass stays the same
contract a decrease in the volume of a substance while the mass remains the same
dispersed to spread out or scatter in different directions
dilute to make thinner, weaker or less strong by adding water
solute the substance that gets dissolved (example - salt or sugar)
solvent the liquid that does the dissolving (example - water)
temperature the measure of how hot or cold a substance it
boiling point the temperature at which a liquid rapidly changes to a gas, 100'C
freeze to change from a liquid to a solid
freezing point the temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid, 0'C
condensation to change from a gas to a liquid as result of cooling
boil to rapidly evaporate
water vapor water that has changed into a gas as a result of heating

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
