Explain Types of Abuse and Neglect

what is a very important part of residents rights preventing abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults
what are vulnerable adults are people over the age of 18 who are at a higher risk of harm or abuse (includes the elderly in care facilities)
ABUSE is purposeful MISTREATMENT that causes physical, mental, emotional or financial pain or injury to someone
there are many different types of abuse: physical abuse, psychological abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse, assault, battery, domestic violence, workplace violence, false imprisonment, involuntary seclusion, sexual harassment, substance abuse, defamation, neglect, negligence
PHYSICAL ABUSE is any treatment, intentional or not, that causes harm to a persons body
what does physical abuse include slapping, hitting, kicking, cutting, burning, pushing, shoving, and rough handling
what is an example of physical abuse in regards to resident pushing a resident to move faster and physically restraining a resident
PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE emotional harm caused by threatening, frighting, isolating, intimidating, humiliating or insulting a person.
what is an example of psychological abuse in regards to a resident threating to harm a resident if he tells another caregiver about a problem or sharing something potentially embarrassing about a resident with another resident
VERBAL ABUSE use of language, pictures or gestures that threaten , embarrass or insult a person
SEXUAL ABUSE nonconsensual sexual contact of any type. Any kind of nonconsensual sexual activity is abuse
examples of sexual abuse in regards to a resident showing sexually explicit magazines to a resident, or rubbing against a resident inappropriately during personal care
FINANCIAL ABUSE improper or illegal use of a persons money, possessions, property, or other assets
example of financial abuse offering to give a resident special care if the resident pays the nursing assistant; taking cash from a resident, using a residents credit or debit cards and attempting to changes a residents will
ASSAULT is a threat to harm a person, resulting in the person feeling fearful that she will be harmed
what is an example of assault telling a resident they will be slapped if they don't stop yelling
BATTERY is the intentional touching of a person without their consent
what is an example of battery a nursing assistant hitting or pushing a resident (also considered physical abuse); performing a procedure on a resident who has refused the procedure
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE abuse by spouses, intimate partners, or family members; can be physical, sextual or emotional. the victim can be a women or man of any age or a child
INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE abbreviation IPV
INTIMATE PARTNER VOILENCE is physical, sexual or emotional harm caused by a partner or spouse. It also includes isolating a partner or restricting the partners access to help and information
WORKPLACE VIOLENCE is abuse of staff by other staff members, residents or visitors. It can be verbal, physical or sexual.
examples of workplace violence includes improper touching and discussion about sexual subjects; a residents family member threatening a staff member with voilence
FALSE IMPRISONMENT is unlawful restraint that affects a persons freedom of movement
what are examples of false imprisonment both the threat of being physically restrained and actually being restrained are types; not allowing a resident to leave the building (residents who have dementia may be confined for their own safety)
INVOLUNTARY SECLUSION is the separation of a person from others against the persons will
examples of involuntary seclusion nursing assistant forcing a resident to stay in her room with the door closed
SEXUAL HARASSMENT is any unwelcome sexual advance or behavior that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive working enviorment
examples of sexual harassment requests for sexual favors, unwanted touching, and other acts of a sexual nature ; a supervisor telling a team member that she will get the work schedule she want if she has sex with him
SUBSTANCE ABUSE is the repeated use of legal or illegal substances in a way that is harmful to oneself or others
substances can be legal or even prescribed and still be abused
examples of substance abuse alcohol and cigarettes are legal for adults but are often abused ; over the counter (OTC) medications an be addictive and harmful ; even paint or glue may be abused
DEFAMATION is any untrue statement - written or oral - that harms a persons reputation and/or damages the persons ability to make a living
LIBEL defamation in written form
SLANDER defamation in oral form
NEGLECT is the failure to provide necessary care or services, resulting in physical, mental or emotional hard to a person
examples of neglect leaving a bed ridden resident alone for lengthy periods, ignoring a residents call light, or denying the resident food, medication, dentures or eyeglasses
NEGLIGENCE means actions or the failure to act or give proper care to a person resulting in unintended injury
example of negligence a nursing assistant forgetting to lock the bed wheels before transferring a resident. if the resident falls and is injured it is considered negligence
MALPRACTICE occurs when a negligent or improper act due to professional misconduct results in damage or injury to a person
if an NA sees or suspects that a resident is being abused in any way she is legally required to report it immediately to her supervisor
an NA should document what in regards to abuse should document any complaints of abuse reported to her and anything she witnesses
what should an NA do if action is not taken after reporting abuse she should keep reporting up the chain of command until action is taken
what should an NA do if no action is taken at the facility she can call the state abuse hotline or contact the proper state agency
how can abuse be reported anonymously
what are abuse agencies required to do required to promptly investigate reports of abuse
what are the responsibilities of all NAs all residents in the care facility are the responsibilities of the NAs working there. Even though an NA may be assigned a certain number of residents, he must still respond to any resident in need
