Independent Variable The part of an experiment that you change to see how it affects something else.
Dependent Variable The part of an experiment that you measure—it changes because of the independent variable.
Control Variable A factor that is kept the same throughout the experiment to make sure the test is fair.
SI Units The standard units scientists use to measure things like length (meters), mass (kilograms), and time (seconds).
Hypothesis An educated guess or prediction that can be tested through experiments.
Repetition Doing the same experiment multiple times to check for consistent results.
Replication When another person repeats your experiment to see if they get the same results.
Trials The number of times an experiment or test is done.
Experiment A test or procedure used to find out something or prove a hypothesis.
Scientific Model A representation (like a drawing, diagram, or simulation) that helps explain or predict how something works.
Simulations A virtual model that mimics a real-world process to study it safely or easily.
Limitation A weakness or restriction in an experiment that might affect the results or what you can learn from it.
Empirical Evidence Data and observations collected through experiments or real-world experience.
Natural Phenomenon Something that happens in nature and can be observed, like rain, earthquakes, or lightning.
Scientific Law A statement that describes something that always happens under certain conditions, based on repeated experiments (e.g., gravity).
Scientific Theory A well-tested explanation of why something happens, supported by lots of evidence (e.g., the theory of evolution).

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
