Nature of Science

Unit 1

TermDefinition
empirical evidence The observations,measurements,and other types of data that people gather and test to support and evaluate scientific explanations.
theory A system of ideas that explains many related observations and is supported by a large body of evidence acquired through scientific investigation.
law A descriptive statement or equation that reliably predicts events under certain conditions
experiment A procedure carried out to support or refute a hypothesis, or determine the efficacy or likelihood of something previously untried
hypothesis An idea or explanation that you then test through study and experimentation
dependent variable What you measure in the experiment and what is affected during the experiment
observation An act or instance of noticing or perceiving
independent variable A variable that stands alone and isn't changed by the other variables you are trying to measure
data a collection of information gathered by observations, measurements, research or analysis
model a person or thing that serves as a subject for an artist, sculptor, writer, etc
engineering the application of science and math's to solve problems
technology the application of conceptual knowledge to achieve practical goals, especially in a reproducible way
prototype an early sample, model, or release of a product built to test a concept or process
trade-off a giving up of one thing in return for another
risk benefit analysis A method for weighing up the likely risks (in terms of the incidence and severity) associated with exposure to a substance versus the likely benefits
life cycle analysis the systematic analysis of the potential environmental impacts of products or services during their entire life cycle.
Pugh cart a method used to analyze different ideas and to determine the optimal choice.
