SI Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Hypothesis A testable prediction or educated guess about the outcome of the experiment
Conclusion Summarizes the results of an experiment and explains whether or not they support the hypothesis
Mass The amount of matter in an object
Volume The amount of space an object takes up
Density The measure of how much mass is packed into a given volume
Data Information and observations that are collected during an experiment
Thermometer A science tool used to measure temperature
Beaker A cylindrical container used for holding, mixing, and heating liquids
Problem A question that can be investigated and tested during an experiment
Procedure A detailed, step-by-step set of instructions for conducting an experiment
Materials All the supplies needed to conduct an experiment
Independent Variable The variable that is changed or manipulated during the experiment
Qualitative Observation A description using your senses
Dependent Variable What is being measured in the experiment
Quantitative Observation Description of something using numbers
Graduated Cylinder A tool used to accurately measure a liquid
Triple Beam Balance A tool used to measure mass
Experiment A controlled test designed to investigate a hypothesis and question
Investigation The process of exploring the natural world to answer a question or test a hypothesis
Observation The act of using your senses and measurements to gather information
Purpose The reason for an experiment and provides understanding of what the goal of the experiment is
Model A representation for something real, used to help understand and explain
Analyze To carefully study and break down information or data to understand it
Meter Stick A tool used to measure distance
Constant A factor in an experiment that does not change throughout the entire experiment
