Characteristics of Sound Pitch, Register, Timbre, Volume, Articulation, Duration
Pitch The highness or lowness of sound
Register A group of pitches within an instrument’s or a voice’s overall range
Timbre The quality of a sound that distinguishes it from other sounds of the same pitch and loudness
Volume The loudness or softness of a sound
Articulation How pitches are begun, sustained and released
Duration The length of time a sound lasts from its beginning to its end.
Three Pillars of Music Rhythm > Melody > Harmony
Rhythm The pattern of regularly recurring beats; Can exist without melody
Melody A series of notes played in an order that is memorable and recognizable as a separate unit; Cannot exist without rhythm
Harmony The concept of combining different sounds together in order to create new, distinct musical ideas
Tempo The speed in which music is played
Meter The way beats are grouped into regular units
Beat A regular pulse that establishes the speed at which the music is performed.
Form The organizing principle in music, and its basic elements are repetition, contrast, and variation
Texture the relationship of melodic and sometimes harmonic elements with each other
Dynamics Convey emotion, meaning, direction, and intention to the music; the volume level
Four Structural Elements Sound, Melody, Rhythm , Harmony
Monophonic A single melodic line, or tune, without any accompanying harmony or chords
Homophonic A musical texture of several parts in which one melody predominates; the others support the main
Polyphonic Two or more independent melodic lines performed simultaneously
Heterophonic Multiple variants of a single melodic line heard simultaneously
Emotions Happy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, Disgust; 30s biochemical reaction
Feelings An emotion connected with a thought generated by a particular experience
Ornamentation Decorative notes or flourishes added to a melody or composition
