Biology Honors Unit 1

TermDefinition
Science The pursuit and application of knowledge and understanding of the natural world based on empirical evidence
Pseudoscience Beliefs or practices mistakenly regarded as being based on evidence but are based on thoughts, feelings, ideas, and myths
Empirical Evidence Measurements and data gathered by scientists to develop a scientific explanation
Literature Research Using prior research from articles and texts to draw new conclusions and answer questions
Observational Study A way of gathering empirical evidence in the natural environment
Controlled Experiment A way of gathering empirical evidence by manipulating variables and measuring outcomes
Scientific Model Representations of objects, systems, or events that are used as tools for understanding the natural world
Hypothesis A testable idea or explanation that leads to a scientific investigation
Independent Variable The factor that is changed or manipulated in an investigation
Dependent Variable The factor that is measured in an experiment to determine the outcome of the test variable
Observation The process of obtaining information by using the five senses.
Inference A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning about what is happening now or what has happened in the past
Prediction A statement about a future event or future data based on observation and experience
Scientific Theory a well-tested, widely accepted explanation of a naturally occurring event
Scientific Law A statement or description about what is expected to happen under normal conditions, supported with evidence and widely accepted
Validity How accurately a method measures what it is intended to measure, reliability of data
Bias Prejudice in favor of or against one thing or group compared with another, unfair or distorted data collection
