| Term | Definition |

| Conservation of Matter | The total amount of matter stays the same, even when two types of matter are mixed together |
| Mixture | A combination of two or more substances that can be separated in some physical ways |
| Particle | Small pieces of a material. |
| Solute | A substance that dissolves into a solvent. |
| Solution | A mixture where a liquid a solvent dissolves a solute. |
| Solvent | A liquid that dissolves solutes. |
| Sieve | A tool with a meshed bottom used for separating materials based on particle size, primarily by straining or filtering. |
| Float | to rest or move on the surface of a liquid. |
| Funnel | A tube or pipe that is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, used for guiding liquid or powder into a small opening. |
| Iron Filings | tiny pieces of iron that are produced when iron or steel is filed, shaved, ground, or cut. Usually separated by a magnet |
| Strainers | An object with holes which you pour a liquid through in order to separate the liquid from the solids in it. |
| Tweezers | A small instrument like a pair of pincers for separating mixtures |
