Unit 2 Investigating Mixtures

TermDefinition
Conservation of Matter The total amount of matter stays the same, even when two types of matter are mixed together
Mixture A combination of two or more substances that can be separated in some physical ways
Particle Small pieces of a material.
Solute A substance that dissolves into a solvent.
Solution A mixture where a liquid a solvent dissolves a solute.
Solvent A liquid that dissolves solutes.
Sieve A tool with a meshed bottom used for separating materials based on particle size, primarily by straining or filtering.
Float to rest or move on the surface of a liquid.
Funnel A tube or pipe that is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, used for guiding liquid or powder into a small opening.
Iron Filings tiny pieces of iron that are produced when iron or steel is filed, shaved, ground, or cut. Usually separated by a magnet
Strainers An object with holes which you pour a liquid through in order to separate the liquid from the solids in it.
Tweezers A small instrument like a pair of pincers for separating mixtures
