List types of restraints; Physical and Chemical Physical restraints include devices like wrist restraints, vest or jacket restraints, soft cloth mittens, seat belts, and belts used to limit movement, Chemical restraints are medications used to control behavior or restrict movement.
List the risks of restraints include physical injuries (like cuts, bruises, or fractures), decreased muscle strength and mobility, pressure ulcers, breathing difficulties, emotional distress, and loss of dignity or trust.
Know the Resident's Rights pertaining to restraints have the right to be free from unnecessary restraints, to receive care in the least restrictive way, to be informed about the use of restraints, and to have restraints used only with their consent or when medically necessary for safety.
What is the criteria for restraint use when prescribed by a doctor, to prevent harm to the resident or others, after all other alternatives have failed, and must be used safely and monitored regularly.
What is an acceptable reason for the Doctor to order a restraint? is to prevent the resident from causing harm to themselves or others when less restrictive methods have been ineffective.
Discuss the Nurse Aide's Role in caring for the restrained residents must provide safe, compassionate care by regularly checking the resident, ensuring restraints are used correctly, reporting any problems, and protecting the resident’s dignity and safety.
Know the safety guidelines while using restraints include checking the resident frequently, ensuring restraints are not too tight, keeping the resident’s skin clean and dry, providing range-of-motion exercises, and always monitoring for signs of distress or injury.
Relate the rules for applying restraints safely include obtaining a doctor’s order, using the least restrictive method, ensuring the restraint fits properly without cutting off circulation, securing restraints to a moveable part of the bed frame (not the side rails), and checking the resident often.
Discuss Observations and Recording involve carefully monitoring the resident’s physical and emotional condition while restrained, noting any changes or problems, and accurately documenting these details to inform the healthcare team.
