Nurse Aide I Module K Restraint Elimination, Reduction Definiton List

TermDefinition
Aspiration when food, liquid, or saliva accidentally enters the airway or lungs instead of the stomach, which can cause choking or infection.
Chemical Restraint a medication used to control a person’s behavior or restrict their movement, not prescribed to treat a medical condition.
Contracture is the permanent tightening of muscles, tendons, or ligaments that restricts movement of a joint.
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person.
Enabler is a device or equipment that helps a resident move more freely and safely, promoting independence.
False Imprisonment is unlawfully restraining or restricting a person’s freedom to move without their consent.
Fracture a break or crack in a bone.
Pelvic Support refers to devices or techniques used to help maintain proper alignment and support of the pelvis, especially for residents who have difficulty sitting upright or are at risk of pressure injuries.
Restraint is any method, device, or material used to restrict a person’s movement or behavior.
Restraint Alternative is a safer, less restrictive way to help keep a resident safe without using physical or chemical restraints.
Restraint-free Care means providing care without using any physical or chemical restraints, promoting the resident’s freedom and dignity.
Seat Belt a safety device used to secure a resident in a chair or wheelchair to prevent falls or injury, used only when necessary and with proper consent.
Soft Cloth Mitten a type of restraint designed to prevent residents from scratching or injuring themselves, while allowing some hand movement
Strangulation is the act of compressing the neck, which can block airflow and blood flow, potentially causing serious injury or death.
Vest or Jacket a type of physical restraint worn like clothing to safely limit a resident’s movement and prevent harm.
Wrist Restraint a device used to safely restrict a resident’s wrist movement to prevent injury or harm.
