Science Vocab

TermDefinition
Float to rise to or near the surface of water
Gas a state of matter in which the substance takes the shape of its container
Liquid take the shape of their container, filling the bottom of the container first
Magnetism an attracting or repelling force that causes a magnetic material to move
Mass the amount of matter in something measured in grams using a scale
Matter anything that has mass and takes up space
Sink to fall below the surface of water
Solid has a definite shape and size
States of matter the forms matter can take, such as solid, liquid, and gas; sometimes called phases of matter
Temperature a way of measuring how hot or cold something is; temperature is measured using either the Fahrenheit (F) or Celsius (C) scale
Physical Property a characteristic of matter that can be observed, measured, or tested
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) equipment such as goggles and gloves used for protection during an investigation.
Safety The condition where it is less likely to be harmed
Rules an instruction that must be followed.
Hazard a danger (something unsafe)
Risk a situation that puts someone in danger.
Celcius (C) a temperature scale on which water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees.
Fahrenheit (F) a temperature scale on which water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees.
Thermometer a tool that measures the temperature (how hot or cold something is).
Definite The shape does not change
Condensation the process through which a gas changes into a liquid
Cool To make less hot
Evaporation a process through which a liquid changes to a gas.
Heat a kind of energy that makes objects warmer.
Substance a particular kind of matter.
Water Vapor water in the form of a gas.
Freeze be turned into ice or another solid as a result of extreme cold.
Melt make or become liquefied by heat.
