Tropical climate Hot, but not always humid; can include dry deserts or snow-capped mountains
Oceanic islands Islands never connected to continents; species had to fly, float, or drift there
Continental islands Fragments of continents or islands once connected to landmasses (e.g. Borneo)
Endemic species Species found only in one location, often due to long isolation (e.g. Pohnpei lory)
Rainfall zones Micronesia has a central zone with steady rain; outer regions can be dry or monsoonal
Monsoon winds Seasonally reversing winds that bring wet and dry seasons (e.g. in Guam)
Typhoons Severe storms like hurricanes; common in western Pacific, especially during El Niño
Habitat Specific environment shaped by climate and other factors where organisms live
Ecosystem Interaction of living organisms with their physical environment
Early settlement Pacific Islands settled ~3,500 years ago by seafarers with crops and animals
Introduced species Plants and animals brought by early humans (e.g. taro, pigs, dogs, coconuts)
Human impact Original settlers altered landscapes with fire, farming, and hunting
European contact Increased habitat destruction, species extinction, and invasive introductions
Easter Island collapse Society collapsed after overusing resources, especially deforestation
Environmental change Islands reflect global environmental issues like deforestation and species loss
