Practice
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Tropical climate | Hot, but not always humid; can include dry deserts or snow-capped mountains |
| Oceanic islands | Islands never connected to continents; species had to fly, float, or drift there |
| Continental islands | Fragments of continents or islands once connected to landmasses (e.g. Borneo) |
| Endemic species | Species found only in one location, often due to long isolation (e.g. Pohnpei lory) |
| Rainfall zones | Micronesia has a central zone with steady rain; outer regions can be dry or monsoonal |
| Monsoon winds | Seasonally reversing winds that bring wet and dry seasons (e.g. in Guam) |
| Typhoons | Severe storms like hurricanes; common in western Pacific, especially during El Niño |
| Habitat | Specific environment shaped by climate and other factors where organisms live |
| Ecosystem | Interaction of living organisms with their physical environment |
| Early settlement | Pacific Islands settled ~3,500 years ago by seafarers with crops and animals |
| Introduced species | Plants and animals brought by early humans (e.g. taro, pigs, dogs, coconuts) |
| Human impact | Original settlers altered landscapes with fire, farming, and hunting |
| European contact | Increased habitat destruction, species extinction, and invasive introductions |
| Easter Island collapse | Society collapsed after overusing resources, especially deforestation |
| Environmental change | Islands reflect global environmental issues like deforestation and species loss |
