Advancing a diet means gradually changing a person's diet from liquids to solid foods as their condition improves.
Aspiration when food, liquid, or saliva accidentally enters the lungs instead of the stomach.
Calcium a mineral essential for strong bones, teeth, muscle function, and nerve signaling.
Calorie a unit of energy that measures the amount of energy food provides to the body.
Carbohydrates are nutrients that provide the body with a primary source of energy.
Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in, leading to a lack of enough water for normal function.
Dysphagia difficulty swallowing, which can increase the risk of choking or aspiration.
Fats are nutrients that provide energy, help the body absorb vitamins, and support cell growth.
Fluid Balance is the state where the amount of fluid taken in equals the amount lost, keeping the body properly hydrated.
Force Fluids means encouraging a person to drink more liquids to maintain proper hydration.
Intake means to all the fluids and foods a person consumes by mouth, tube, or IV.
Iron a mineral that helps carry oxygen in the blood by forming part of hemoglobin in red blood cells.
Malnutrition a condition that occurs when the body doesn’t get enough nutrients, either from not eating enough or not eating the right kinds of food.
Minerals are essential nutrients that help the body function properly, including building bones, making hormones, and maintaining a healthy heartbeat.
NPO stands for "nothing by mouth," meaning the person should not eat or drink anything.
Nutrients are substances in food that the body needs for energy, growth, and repair.
Nutrition is the process of taking in and using food to support the body’s growth, repair, and overall health.
Nutrition Facts Label provides information about the nutrient content, serving size, calories, and ingredients of a food product.
Output is the fluid and other substances a person eliminates from the body, such as urine, stool, sweat, and vomit.
Proteins are nutrients that help build and repair body tissues and are essential for growth and immune function.
Restrict Fluids means limiting the amount of liquids a person can drink, usually to prevent fluid buildup or other health issues,
Special Diet (therapeutic diet or modified diet) a meal plan modified to meet a person's specific health needs or medical conditions.
Serving Amount is the recommended quantity of food or drink typically consumed at one time, used to help measure nutritional information.
Serving Size is the specific amount of food or drink that is considered one portion for nutritional labeling and dietary guidance.
Vitamins are essential nutrients that help regulate body processes and keep organs healthy.
