| pathogen | An agent that causes disease. |
| antibody | A protein produced by the immune system to identify specific pathogens |
| primary immune response | The first time the body is exposed to a pathogen. During this response, specialized cells produce antibodies that latch onto the pathogen and help destroy it. This process takes time, usually several days. |
| secondary immune response | Memory cells quickly recognize the pathogen because antibodies had already been created from the first exposure. |
