| Evolution | The change in a species over time through genetic variation and natural selection. |
| Natural selection | The process where organisms better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more. |
| Adaptation | A trait that increases an organism’s chance of survival and reproduction. |
| Fossil record | Historical sequence of life indicated by fossils found in layers of the Earth’s crust. |
| Speciation | The formation of new and distinct species through evolution. |
| Homologous structures | Body parts that are similar in structure but may have different functions, indicating common ancestry. |
| Vestigial structures | Structures that have lost most or all of their original function |
| Embryology | The study of embryos and early development; similarities suggest common ancestry. |
| Genetic variation | Differences in DNA among individuals, which contributes to evolution. |
