TermDefinition
Evolution The change in a species over time through genetic variation and natural selection.
Natural selection The process where organisms better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more.
Adaptation A trait that increases an organism’s chance of survival and reproduction.
Fossil record Historical sequence of life indicated by fossils found in layers of the Earth’s crust.
Speciation The formation of new and distinct species through evolution.
Homologous structures Body parts that are similar in structure but may have different functions, indicating common ancestry.
Vestigial structures Structures that have lost most or all of their original function
Embryology The study of embryos and early development; similarities suggest common ancestry.
Genetic variation Differences in DNA among individuals, which contributes to evolution.
Extinction The permanent disappearance of a species from Earth.
