TermDefinition
Cell The basic unit of structure and function in living things.
Organelle A specialized structure within a cell that performs a specific function (e.g., nucleus, mitochondria).
Cell membrane A semi-permeable membrane that surrounds the cell, controlling the movement of substances in and out.
Mitochondria The powerhouse of the cell; site of cellular respiration.
Chloroplast Organelle in plant cells where photosynthesis occurs.
Homeostasis The maintenance of stable internal conditions despite external changes.
Photosynthesis The process by which plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make glucose and oxygen.
Cellular respiration Process by which cells convert glucose and oxygen into energy (ATP), carbon dioxide, and water.
Enzyme A protein that speeds up chemical reactions in organisms.
Tissue A group of similar cells that perform a specific function.
Organ system A group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions.
