What are the four basic tissue types in the human body? Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue
Whatis homeostasis? The body's ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite external change.
What is the primary function of the mitochondria? To produce ATP through cellular respiration.
Which organelle is responsible for protein synthesis? Ribosomes
What are the major components of the skeletal system? Bones, cartilage, ligaments, and joints.
What type of muscle tissue is involuntary and striated? Cardiac muscle
What are the main functions of the integumentary system? Protection, temperature regulation, sensory reception, excretion, and vitamin D production.
Describe the sliding filament theory of muscle contraction. Actin and myosin filaments slide past each other, shortening the muscle fiber.
Which part of the brain controls voluntary movement? The frontal lobe, specifically the primary motor cortex.
What is the function of the sympathetic nervous system? To prepare the body for 'fight or flight' responses.
What are the layers of the skin from outermost to innermost? Epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis (subcutaneous layer).
What is the main function of the lymphatic system? To return interstitial fluid to the bloodstream and provide immune responses.
What hormone regulates calcium levels in the blood? parathyroid hormone PTH
What is the basic structural and functional unit of the kidney? The nephron
What is the function of red bone marrow? To produce red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets (hematopoiesis).
