Nurse Aide I Module I Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Base of Support | the area beneath a person that includes the feet and helps keep the body balanced and stable. |
| Body Mechanics | the way the body moves and maintains balance to use muscles safely and efficiently while preventing injury. |
| Center of Gravity | the point in the body where its weight is evenly balanced, helping maintain stability and balance. |
| Fowler’s Position | when the head of the bed is raised between 45 and 60 degrees, helping the resident sit up comfortably. |
| Full-sling Mechanical Lift | a type of lift that uses a full-body sling to support and safely lift a resident who cannot support their own weight. |
| High Fowler’s Position | when the head of the bed is raised between 60 and 90 degrees, allowing the resident to sit almost upright. |
| Lateral Position | when the resident lies on their side, either the left or right. |
| Logrolling | turning a resident’s body as one unit without twisting the spine to keep the back straight and prevent injury. |
| Mechanical Lift | a device used to safely move or transfer residents who cannot help move themselves, reducing injury risk for both the resident and caregiver. |
| Posture | the way a person holds and positions their body while sitting, standing, or moving. |
| Prone Position | when the resident lies flat on their stomach with their face down. |
| Protractor | a tool used to measure angles, often used to check joint angles in healthcare. |
| Sims Position | when the resident lies partly on their side and partly on their stomach with one leg bent, often used for enemas or exams. |
| Stand-assist lift | a device that helps residents who can partially bear their weight to stand and move safely. |
| Supine Position | when the resident lies flat on their back with their face up. |
