Define communication and what can the NA do if the resident doesn't speak English? Communication is the exchange of information, thoughts, or feelings between people, and if a resident doesn’t speak English, the nurse aide should use simple words, gestures, pictures, or get an interpreter to help.
Proper ways to respond if resident didn't understand us? If a resident doesn’t understand, the nurse aide should speak slowly, use simple language, repeat or rephrase information, and use nonverbal cues or visual aids.
Define Verbal communication The use of spoken or written words to share information and express thoughts or feelings.
Define Non-Verbal communication is sharing messages without words, using body language, facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice.
Know the barriers to good communication good communication include hearing or speech problems, language differences, cultural misunderstandings, distractions, and emotional factors like fear or anger.
Describe the importance of communication is important because it helps build trust, ensures accurate care, prevents mistakes, and supports residents’ emotional well-being.
Define culture sensitivity recognizing and respecting differences in beliefs, values, and customs to provide respectful and effective care.
How can culture affect patient care? by influencing beliefs about health, illness, treatments, communication styles, and family involvement in decisions.
How can religion affect patient care? by influencing dietary restrictions, medical treatments, end-of-life decisions, and preferences for modesty or prayer.
Know the importance of communication is understanding culture and religion in patient care Understanding culture and religion in communication helps provide respectful, personalized care that honors patients’ beliefs and improves cooperation and outcomes.
Why are active listening skills needed in communication? to fully understand the resident’s needs, build trust, and respond appropriately.
