Anatomy Week 1-5

TermDefinition
Conductivity Capacity of living cells to transmit a wave of electrical disturbance from one point to another within the body.
Secretion Production and release of important substances, such as digestive juices and hormones, for diverse body functions.
Medial Toward the midline of the body.
Osteoporosis Bones lose mass and can change structure, causing a metabolic disorder.
Osteomyelitis Bacterial infection of bone and marrow; difficult to treat due to decreased blood supply and increased density; associated with other infections or direct bone contamination.
Stratum Corneum (horny layer) Several layers of flakelike dead cells (or coenocytes) mostly made up of dense networks of keratin fibers cemented by glycophospholipids and forming a tough, waterproof barrier; the keratinized layer: a, sulcus (groove) b, friction ridge.
Dermoepidermal junction (DEJ) The basement membrane, a unique and complex arrangement of adhesive components that glue the epidermis and dermis together.
Muscle cells Structural features: Elongated, threadlike; contain tiny fibers that slide together forcefully. Function: Contract (shorten) to allow movement of body parts.
Cytoskeleton Support framework of the cell and its organelles; functions in cell movement (using molecular motors); forms cell extensions (microvilli, cilia, flagella).
Ionic (electrovalent) Transfer of electrons; strong electrostatic force; can dissociate in aqueous solution.
