Nurse Aid Module C The Resident's Environment Definition List

TermDefinition
BEFAST A mnemonic to quickly identify signs of a stroke: balance problems, eye vision changes, facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty, and the importance of timely emergency response.
Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA or Stroke) A sudden interruption of blood supply to the brain, causing brain damage. Signs include weakness, trouble speaking, facial drooping, and loss of coordination.
Elopement When a resident with cognitive impairment (like dementia) leaves a safe area or facility without staff knowledge, putting themselves at risk.
Fall An unintentional movement to the ground or lower surface, often resulting in injury, especially common in older adults in healthcare settings.
Hazard A potential source of harm, danger, or adverse health effect to people, property, or the environment.
Medical Emergency A sudden illness or injury that requires immediate medical attention to prevent serious harm or death.
PASS A safety acronym that describes the steps to properly use a fire extinguisher: Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep side to side.
RACE An acronym used in fire safety that defines the steps to take during a fire emergency: Rescue those in danger, Activate the alarm, Contain the fire, and Extinguish the fire or Evacuate if necessary
Resident Environment The physical surroundings where a resident lives, including their room, furniture, and shared areas, designed to be safe and comfortable.
Safety in the Resident Environment Practices and precautions taken to keep the living space free from hazards and protect residents from harm or injury.
Seizure A sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain that can cause changes in behavior, movements, or consciousness.
Wandering When a resident moves about without purpose or direction, often seen in people with dementia, which can put them at risk of getting lost or injured.
