Body Planes, Sections, and Cavities

sagittal section cut along the lengthwise plane of the body. cut into left and right
midsagittal section cut directly down the median into left and right parts.
frontal section cut that divides the body into anterior and posterior parts
transverse or cross section cut dividing the body into superior and inferior parts
dorsal body cavity made up by the cranial cavity and the spinal cavity
cranial cavity space inside the bony skull (the brain)
spinal cavity extends from the cranial cavity to the end of the spinal cord
ventral body cavity contains all the structures within the chest and abdomen, divided into the thoracic cavity, diaphragm, abdominopelvic cavity
thoracic cavity lungs, heart, rib cage, sternum
diaphragm dome-shaped muscle separating the thoracic and abdominal cavities
mediastinum separates the lungs into right and left cavities in the thoracic cavity
abdominopelvic cavity inferior to the diaphragm, divided into the abdominal and pelvic cavities
abdominal cavity stomach, liver, intestines, and others
pelvic cavity reproductive organs, bladder, rectum
