Part 3 Vocabulary
TC3 BIOL 105 Final Exam (ch. 40-43)
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Photic zone | In an aquatic biome, the area where there is sufficient light for photosynthesis |
| Bioremediation | The intentional use of organisms (usually prokaryotes, fungi, or plants) to detoxify polluted ecosystems |
| Aphotic zone | The part of the ocean that doesn't get enough light for photosynthesis. |
| Keystone species | Species that exert strong control on community structure by the pivotal importance of their ecological roles |
| Detritus | Nonliving organic material, such as the remains of dead organisms, feces and fallen leaves |
| Niche | An organism's "job" in its ecosystem; its use of the biotic and abiotic resources |
| Emigration | movement of individuals out of a population |
| Limiting nutrient | A chemical component that greatly impacts the overall growth of a population; it often must be added for production to increase |
| Carrying capacity | The maximum population size that an ecosystem's available resources can support |
| Biodiversity hotspot | A relatively small area with numerous endemic species and a large number of endangered and threatened species |
| Invasive species | Non-native organism introduced to an area, usually by accident |
| Trophic efficiency | The percentage of production transferred from one trophic level to the next |
| Herbivore vs carnivore | Herbivore: A consumer that does not feed on animal products; Carnivore: A consumer that feeds on animal products |
| Producer vs consumer | Producer: General term for any organism that can create its own nourishment using, usually as a result of photosynthesis; Consumer: An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms |
| Detrivore (decomposer) | An organism that gets its nutrients from dead or decaying organic material |
| Predator/prey | Predator: In a hunt for food, this is the organism doing the hunting; Prey: The organism being hunted |
| Biotic factors | all the living things in an ecosystem |
| Abiotic factors | all the nonliving things in an ecosystem |
