Carbon Cycle

| biosphere | All the places on Earth where life exists, including land, water, and the air. |
| hydrosphere | All the water on Earth—like oceans, rivers, lakes, and even water underground and in the air. |
| geosphere | The solid parts of Earth, including rocks, soil, and the layers beneath the surface. |
| carbon cycle | The movement of carbon through the Earth’s systems—like the air, water, living things, and the ground. |
| decomposition | The process where dead plants and animals are broken down by bacteria and fungi, returning nutrients to the soil. |
| combustion | The burning of materials (like wood or fossil fuels), which releases carbon dioxide into the air. |
| chemical process | A change where substances are transformed into new substances, like when food is digested or fuel is burned. |
| physical process | A change in the form or appearance of a substance, but not its chemical makeup—like melting ice or breaking a rock. |
| geological process | Natural events that shape the Earth, like earthquakes, volcanoes, and the formation of mountains. |
| biological processes | Activities done by living things, like breathing, growing, eating, and decomposing. |
