Chapter 1

McGraw Hill Lesson 3 Earth's Systems and Interactions

TermDefinition
water cycle the continuous movement of water on, above, and below Earth's surface
evaporation the process by which a liquid, such as water, changes into a gas. Water vapor, like other gases in the atmosphere, is invisible
transpiration the process by which plants release water vapor through their leaves.
condensation the process by which a gas changes to a liquid
precipitation moisture that falls from clouds to Earth's surface
rock cycle the series of processes that transport and continually change rocks into different forms
uplift the process that moves large bodies of Earth materials to higher elevations
carbon cycle the series of processes that continuously move carbon among Earth systems
phosphorous cycle the series of processes that move phosphorus among Earth systems (geosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere)
moisture water in the adsorbed or absorbed phase
deposition is the process of sediment being laid down in a new location, such as by rivers, glaciers, or wind
compaction the process where sediments are squeezed together, reducing the spaces between individual grains or particles, and ultimately leading to a decrease in the volume of a mass of sediment
pressure a measure of how concentrated (or spread out) a force is
carbon a fundamental chemical element that forms the basis of all known life and plays a vital role in the Earth's atmosphere and climate
phosphorus a crucial element found in the Earth's crust, water, and living organisms, playing a vital role in various processes like photosynthesis, respiration, and energy storage

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
