Minerals and Rocks

hardness a mineral's resistance to being scratched (soft minerals can be scratched with a fingernail; medium minerals can be scratched with a penny; hard minerals can only be scratched with glass)
shape (breakage) how a mineral breaks; they can be smooth or uneven
luster how light reflects off of a mineral; metallic minerals look shiny, non-metallic minerals look dull
color the observed color of the mineral
streak the color of the powder left behind by the mineral
rock a natural solid made up of minerals
3 types of rocks sedimentary igneous metamorphic
sedimentary a type of rock that is formed near water
igneous a type of rock that is formed from magma
metamorphic a type of rock that is formed from intense heat and pressure
weathering when rocks are broken up by physical force
