Minerals and Rocks

| hardness | a mineral's resistance to being scratched (soft minerals can be scratched with a fingernail; medium minerals can be scratched with a penny; hard minerals can only be scratched with glass) |
| shape (breakage) | how a mineral breaks; they can be smooth or uneven |
| luster | how light reflects off of a mineral; metallic minerals look shiny, non-metallic minerals look dull |
| color | the observed color of the mineral |
| streak | the color of the powder left behind by the mineral |
| rock | a natural solid made up of minerals |
| 3 types of rocks | sedimentary igneous metamorphic |
| sedimentary | a type of rock that is formed near water |
| igneous | a type of rock that is formed from magma |
| metamorphic | a type of rock that is formed from intense heat and pressure |
| weathering | when rocks are broken up by physical force |
