Gr10 Earth Sci Reg

1 Intro to Earth's Changing Environment

QuestionAnswer
universe the totality of all things that exist: all matter, time, energy, and space
instrument a device invented by people to extend the senses beyond their normal limits, thus enabling them to make observations that would otherwise be impossible or highly inaccurate
observation the perception of some aspect of the environment by one or more of the human senses, with or without the aid of instruments
inference an INTERPRETATION of an observation; proposing CAUSES, CONCLUSIONS, or explanations for what has been observed.
classification the grouping together of similar observations and inferences to make the study of objects and events in the environment more meaningful or easier to understand
measurement a means of expressing an observation with greater accuracy or precision; provides a numerical value for an aspect of the object or event being observed by comparison with a standard
MASS the amount of MATTER in an object
VOLUME the amount of SPACE that an object occupies
DENSITY The ratio of MASS of an object to its VOLUME. DENSITY = MASS / VOLUME. The concentration of matter in an object.
rate of change How much of a measurable FIELD changes over a given TIME (years, hours, or seconds). Rate of Change = Change in FIELD VALUE / Change in TIME
percent deviation the percent, by which a measurement differs from a STANDARD or ACCEPTED value. Percent Deviation = [(Observed Value - Accepted Value) / Accepted Value] * 100
prediction a type of INFERENCE about the CONDITIONS and behavior of the environment in the FUTURE
cyclic change An orderly change in the environment in which an event REPEATS ITSELF with reference to TIME and SPACE. NOT a random change.
natural hazard a NON HUMAN object, process, or situation that has the possibility of CAUSING LOSS of LIFE or INJURY. Examples: volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, etc. A natural disaster.
interface The BOUNDARY between regions with different properties; the usual place for ENERGY EXCHANGE.
dynamic equilibrium a condition of the BALANCING out of OPPOSNG FORCES or actions: Examples: evaporation and condensation, erosion, and deposition.
natural resources the MATERIALS and ENERGY SOURCES found in the environment that humans use in their daily lives
pollution the occurrence in the environment of a SUBSTANCE or form of ENERGY in concentrations large enough to have an ADVERSE EFFECT on people, property, plant or animal life.
