10 DEPOSITION

QuestionAnswer
deposition process by which sediments are released, settled from or dropped from an erosional system
sorted sediments A deposit or layer of sediment with particles that are similar in size (or density, or shape). It happens when velocity of wind or water erosion system gradually decreases.
sediment characteristics 1) size, 2) shape, 3) density
sorted sediments - EXAMPLE Ex: When a stream flows into the ocean at a delta. The larger, more rounded sediments settle out first.
vast inland sea in the Great Plains  supported by geological evidence, including fossilized marine life and sedimentary rock formations
unsorted sediments When sediments are very mixed in size (or density, or shape), with random distribution of sediment sizes and no bedding or layering.
unsorted sediments - EXAMPLE GLACIER - when a solid erosional system such as a glacier - sediments of all sizes, shapes and densities are deposited together when a glacier melts. MASS MOVEMENT - landslide or avalanche - sediments are dumped together in a random deposit.
horizontal sorting where a stream enters the ocen or lake forming a delta; larger sediments settle first (nearer the shore). Sediments become smaller as distance from the shore increases
erosion and deposition in relation to ENERGY change When KINETIC energy of a system is LARGE, EROSION is the dominant process. When KINETIC energy of a system is SMALL, DEPOSITION is the dominant process
KINETIC energy the energy possessed by an object due to its motion
erosion occurs In areas of steep slope or high discharge.
Stream velocity is FASTEST At the OUTSIDE of curves (meanders). Kinetic energy is HIGH.
erosion in a STREAM Occurs at the outside of curves (meanders).
deposition occurs In areas of GENTLE slope or low discharge. Deposition occurs most at the MOUTH of a stream.
Stream velocity is SLOWEST At the INSIDE of curves (meanders). Kinetic energy is LOW.
deposition in a STREAM Sediments are deposited on the INSIDE of curves (meanders), where velocity is SLOW. Kinetic energy is low.
Flood Plain Wide, flat area to the sides of a stream, where most sediment is deposited.
DEPOSITION by Glaciers Piles of sediment and rock that accumulate along the edges of the glacier.
moraine Piles of sediment and rock that accumulate along the edges of the glacier
Ground Moraines: Ground moraines are relatively flat or gently rolling areas of sediment and rock deposited beneath the glacier.
drumlins Long, low hills of sediment and rock, often found in groups. They indicate the direction of ice flow.
outwash plain Formed by glacial meltwater which sorts and deposits sediments.
Kettle Lakes Depressions formed by melting ice blocks within glacial till can fill with water to form kettle lakes.
sand dunes mounds of sand deposits: with a gentle slope facing into the wind (WINDWARD side) AND with a STEEP slope on the opposite side (LEEWARD side).
barrier island sandbars that are above sea level
