9.1 WEATHERING
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| sediment | Rock PARTICLES that are MOVED by water or wind and deposited in (ocean floor) where they become part of sedimentary rocks. |
| weathering | The CHEMICAL and PHYSICAL breakdown of rocks at the Earth's surface. |
| chemical weathering | The breakdown of rock through CHANGES in MINERAL or CHEMICAL composition. |
| types of chemical weathering | 1) OXIDATION: iron combines with oxygen to make iron oxide (rust) 2) Water as solvent DISSOLVES rock 3) CARBONIC ACID: water combined with carbon dioxide in the air. It dissolves limestone and marble. |
| physical weathering | The BREAKDOWN of rock into smaller pieces WITHOUT chemical change. |
| types of physical weathering | 1) Frost Action 2) Pressure on rocks (from mining or glaciers melting that removes rocks) 3) PRESSURE changes or abrupt TEMPERATURE change |
| abrasion | When rock particles GRIND against rock. Sediments moved by ice, gravity, running water come into contact with other rocks. Type of physical weathering. |
