Cells & Diffusion
PART A
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Controls all activities of the cell, growth and reproduction (both) |
| Cell Membrane | Allows certain molecules to go in or out of the cell, molecules diffuse in or out of a cell, made up of 2 phosphorus layers interconnected (both) |
| Cell Wall | Supports and protects the cell, does not allow molecules in or out (plant cell) |
| Chromosomes | Proteins that contain DNA which has coded information for making molecules (both) |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Produces and stores proteins (both) |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Produces and stores fats and oils (both) |
| Golgi Bodies | Modifies and packages proteins from the rough endoplasmic reticulum with enzymes (both) |
| Ribosomes | Helps rough endoplasmic reticulum to make proteins, it attached to rough endoplasmic reticulum (both) |
| Centrioles | Helps with cell division, spindle fibres (animal cell) |
| Mitochondria | Converts sugar into energy for the cell (both) |
| Cytoplasm | Fluid in the cell, allows organelles to move around (both) |
| Vacuole | Stores water, minerals and vitamins, much bigger in plant cells (both) |
| Lysosomes | Breaks down: food, invading bacteria, old/damaged organelles (animal cells) |
| Chloroplasts | Uses sunlight to make it's own food, photosynthesis, CO2+H2O+light-->sugar+O2 (plant cell) |
| Diffusion | the process of movement of molecules under a concentration gradient |
| Osmosis | The diffusion of water across a semi-permeable membrane. |
| Permeable | A membrane that allows all substances to pass through. |
| Semi-permeable | A membrane that allows only certain substances to pass through. |
| Non-permeable | A membrane that does not allow any substances to pass through. |
