Cells & Diffusion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus - both | Controls all activities of the cell; growth and reproduction |
| Cell membrane - both | - allows certain molecules to go in or cut of cell - molecules diffuse in or out of the cell - made up of a 2 phosphorus layers interconnected |
| Cell wall - plant | - supports and protects the cell; does not allow molecules in or out |
| chromosomes - both | - proteins that contain DNA which has coded info for making molecules |
| Rough E.R - both | - produces and stores protein |
| Smooth E.R - both | - produces and stores fats and oil |
| Goldie Bodies - both | - modifies and packages proteins from rough e.r with enzymes |
| Ribosomes - both | - helps rough e.r makes proteins its attached to rough e.r |
| Centrioles - animal | - helps with cell Diffusion (mitosis) - spindle fibers come from here |
| Mitochondria - both | converts sugar into energy for the cell |
| Cytoplasm - both | fluid in the cell; allows organelles to move around |
| Vacuole - both | - stores water, minerals and vitamins - much bigger in plant cells |
| Lysosomes - animal | breaks down: food, invading bacteria, old/damaged organelles |
| Chloroplast - plant | - Uses sunlight to make its own food - photosynthesis |
| Diffusion | - movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
| Osmosis | - the movement of water molecules from high concentration of water to low concentration of water |
| Permeable | - allows any molecules to go across membrane |
| Semi-permeable | - some molecules |
| non-permeable | - no molecules can go through |
