cells and diffusion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Organelles in animal cells | smooth endoplasmic reticulum, rough endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes (around rough endoplasmic reticulum), nucleolus, chromosomes, mitochondria, cell membrane, cytoplasm, lysosomes, centioles, vacuoles, golgi bodies |
| Orangelles in plant cells | smooth endoplasm reticulum, rough endoplasm reticulum, ribosomes, chromosomes, nucleolus, nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, golgi bodies, vacuole, chloroplasts, cell wall |
| cells are made up of smaller parts called organelles | organelles (smallest) --> cells ----> tissue ----> organs ----> organ system (largest) |
| The cell | the cell is a basic unit of life that is made up of smaller parts that are called orangelles |
| Nucleus (both) | -controls all activities of the cell -growth and production |
| Cell membrane (both) | - allows certain molecules to go in or out of the cell - molecules diffuse in or out of a cell -made up of 2 phosphorous layers interconnected |
| cell wall (plant) | - supports and protects the cell - does not allow molecules in or out |
| rough endoplasm reticulum (both) | - produces and stores protein |
| smooth endoplasm reticulum (both) | -produces and stores fats and oils |
| golgi bodies (both) | - modifies and packages proteins from rough E.R with enzymes |
| ribosomes (both) | - helps rough endoplasm reticulum to make proteins - is attached to rough endoplasm reticulum |
| centrioles (animal) | - helps with cell division - spindle fibres came from here |
| mitochondria (both) | - converts sugar into energy for the cell |
| cytoplasm (both) | -fluid in the cell -allows organelles to move around |
| vacuoles (both) | -stores water, minerals, and vitamins - much bigger in plant cells |
| lysosomes (animal) | - breaks down food, invading bacteria, and old damaged organelles |
| chloroplasts (plant) | - uses sunlight to make its own food -photosynthesis - co2 + H20 + light --> sugar + o2 |
| Diffusion | - movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
| Permable | - allows any molecule to diffuse across membrane |
| semi-permable | -allows certain molecules to diffuse across membrane |
| non-permable | -allows no molecules to diffuse across membrane |
| osmosis | -movement of water molecules from high concentration of water to low concentration of water |
