Cells & Diffusion
Part A of the Study Stack Homework Sheet
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Controls all activities of the cell --> Growth and reproduction Exists in both plant and animal cells |
| Chromosomes | Proteins that contain DNA that has coded information for making molecules. Exists in both plant and animal cells |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Produces and stores oils and fats Exists in both plant and animal cells |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Produces and stores proteins Exists in both plant and animal cells |
| Ribosomes | Helps the Rough ER make proteins --> attached to the Rough ER Exists in both plant and animal cells |
| Cell Membrane | Allows certain molecules to diffuse in or out of the cell --> made up of a 2 phosphorous layer interconnected Exists in both plant and animal cells |
| Golgi Bodies | Packages and modifies proteins from the Rough ER with the help of enzymes Exists in both plant and animal cells |
| Vacuoles | Stores water, minerals, and vitamins --> Bigger in plants Exists in both plant and animal cells |
| Lysosomes | Breaks down food, invading bacteria, or old/damaged organelles Only in animal cells |
| Mitochondria | Converts sugar into energy Exists in both plant and animal cells |
| Centrioles | Spindle fibers come out of the centrioles, helps with mitosis Only in animal cells |
| Cytoplasm | The fluid in the cell --> helps move organelles around Exists in both plant and animal cells |
| Cell Wall | Supports and protects the cell --> does not let any molecules in or out Exists in only plant cells |
| Chloroplasts | Uses sunlight to make its own food --> helps with photosynthesis (CO2 + H20 + light ---> sugar + O2) Only in plant cells |
| Diffusion | Movement of molecules from a high concentration to a low concentration. |
| Permeable | Allows any molecules to diffuse across the membrane |
| Semi-Permeable | Allows some molecules to diffuse across the membrane Ex: Cell membrane |
| Non-Permeable | Allows no molecules to diffuse across the membrane Ex: Cell wall |
| Osmosis | Movement of water molecules from a high concentration of water to a low concentration of water |
