Cells and Diffusion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Diffusion | the movement of molecules for areas of high concentration to low concentration |
| Osmosis | the movement of molecules from high concentration of water to low concentration |
| Permeable | allows any molecule to diffuse across membrane |
| Semipermeable | allows some molecules to diffuse across membrane (cell membrane) |
| Non-permeable | allows no molecules to diffuse across membrane (cell wall) |
| Nucleus | controls all activities of the cell; growth and reproduction |
| Cell membrane | allows certain molecules to go in or out of the cell -> molecules DIFFUSE in or out of the cell -> made up of 2 pf a phosphorous layers interconnected |
| Cell wall | supports and protects the cell; does NOT allow molecules in or out (PLANT CELL) |
| Chromosomes | protein that contain DNA which has coded information for making molecules |
| Rough E.R | produces and stores PROTEIN |
| Smooth E.R | produces and stores FATS and OILS |
| Golgi bodies | modifies and packages protein from ROUGH E.R with enzymes |
| Ribosomes | HELPS rough E.R make proteins. Is attached to rough E.R |
| Centrioles | helps with cell division (mitosis). Spindle fibres come from here (ANIMAL CELL) |
| Mitochondria | converts sugar into energy for the cell |
| Cytoplasm | fluid in the cell; allows organelle to move around |
| Vacuole | stores water, minerals, and vitamins. Much bigger in plant cells |
| Lysosomes | breaks down food including bacteria, old/damaged organelles (ANIMAL CELL) |
| Chloroplasts | uses sunlight to make its own food (PLANT CELL) -> photosynthesis -> C02+H20+light+sugar+O2 |
