Cells and Diffusion
cells and diffusion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Controls all activities of the cell |
| Cell Membrane | allows certain molecules to diffuse in or out of a cell. Made up of 2 phosphorous layers interconnected |
| Cell Wall | Supports and protects the cell. Does not allow anything in or out of the cell. Found in plants |
| Nucleolus | Makes Ribosomes. Found in Nucleus |
| Chromosomes | Proteins that contain DNA which has codon information for making molecules. |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (Rough ER) | produces and stores proteins |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (Smooth ER) | produces and stores fats and oils |
| Golgi Bodies | modifies and packages proteins from Rough ER with enzymes |
| Ribosomes | helps Rough ER make proteins. Attached to Rough ER |
| Centrioles | helps with mitosis. Spindle fibres come from here. Found in animal cells |
| Mitochondria | converts sugar into energy for cell |
| Cytoplasm | fluid in cell; allows organelles to move around |
| Vacuole | stores water, minerals and vitamins. Bigger in plant cells. |
| Lysosomes | breaks down: food, mediary bacteria, and old/damaged organelles. Found in animal cells |
| Chloroplasts | photosynthesis, use sunlight to make it's own food. CO2 + H2O -> Sugar + O2. Found in plant cells |
| Diffusion | movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration |
| Osmosis | movement of water molecules from high concentration of water to low concentration of water |
| Permeable | any molecules can cross molecule |
| Semi-Permeable | Some molecules can cross membrane (animal cells) |
| Non-Permeable | No molecules can cross (plant cells) |
| Units of life (smallest to largest) | organelles - cells - tissues - organs - organ systems |
