Cells Bio gr10
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Controls all functions and activities of the Cell (It is the brain of the cell) |
| Cell membrane | It allows certain molecules go in and out of the cell Made Up of 2 phosphorus layers interconnected |
| Cell wall | Supports and protects the cell; does not allow molecules to diffuse (in Plants Only) |
| Chromosomes | Proteins that contain DNA which has coded info for making molecules |
| Rough ER (endoplasmic Reticulum ) | Produces and stores proteins |
| Smooth ER | Produces and stores fat |
| Golgi Bodies | Modifies and packages proteins from rough ER with enzymes |
| Ribosomes | Helps rough ER make proteins (these are the small dots connected to rough ER) |
| Centrioles | Helps with mitosis (only in Animal Cells) Spindle fibres connect from here |
| Mitochondria | Converts sugar into energy |
| Cytoplasm | Fluid inside the cell; allows organelles to move |
| Vacuole | Stores water, minerals and vitamins |
| Lysosomes | Breaks down food, invading bacteria and old/damaged cells (only in animal) |
| Chloroplasts | Uses sunlight to make its food (photosynthesis) (only in plant Cells) |
| Formula of Photosynthesis | CO2 + H2O +Light ---> sugar + O2 |
| Diffusion | Movement of Molecules from areas of low to high concentration |
| Osmosis | Movement of water molecules from areas of low to high concentration (diffusion for water) |
| Permeable | Any molecule can go through cell membrane |
| Semi permeable | some molecules can go through cell membrane |
| Non Permeable | no molecules can go through cell membrane |
