Foreign Policy / Affairs The plans for dealing with issues outside of the U.S.
Domestic Policy / Affairs The plans for dealing with issues inside of the U.S.
Secretary of State Member of the president's cabinet who deals with all foreign policy situations.
Diplomat Someone who represents their country in a foreign country.
Alliance When two or more countries make an agreement to support each other if there is a problem.
Ambassador A diplomat who is the official representative to another country. This person is living in an embassy within that country.
National Security Working with a foreign country in a peaceful, effective way. The main goal of foreign policy. Ex: Negotiations, treaties.
Treaty An official agreement with another country. President negotiates and the Senate ratifies.
Why is it important to have international relations? The value of peaceful and cooperative relationships between nations is increasingly important.
Impose Sanctions To stop all relations with the country. Ex: no trade, no tourism, no negotiating.
Military Action Members of the U.S. military having a presence in another country typically involving the use of force to stop conflict.
Diplomatic Discussion / Diplomacy Work with the other country to come to a peaceful conclusion
Foreign Aid Sending food, clothes, water, etc. to help a country out.
National Interest The interests of a nation; doing what is best for other nations overlaps with what is best for the U.S.
Why was the U.S. involved in World War II? to save many nations from totalitarian dictators
Why was the U.S. involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis? to protect from the threat of potential nuclear attack by the Soviet Union
Why was the U.S. involved in World War I? to help its allies; German submarine warfare
Why was the U.S. involved in the Vietnam War? to prevent the spread of communism in Southeast Asia
Why was the U.S. involved in the Bay of Pigs? to overthrow a communist dictatorship
Why was the U.S. involved in the Korean War? to defend a nation that had been invaded by communist forces
Why is the U.S. involved in the ongoing War on Terror? to defeat the groups responsible for the 9/11 attacks, which were continuing to attack innocent people
Why was the U.S. involved in the Iraq War? to depose Saddam Hussein and to search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq
