Ecology

Definitions, food chains, competition, relationships

TermDefinition
Ecology definition The study of organisms and how they interact with each other and their environment
Biosphere All the parts of earth that support life.
Ecosystem A unit consisting of living organisms interacting with each other and their environment
Habitat The place an organism lives
Population The number of organisms of a species in a habitat
Community All the organisms in a habitat (different species)
Abiotic factors Non-living features of an environment
Examples of abiotic factors Wind Sunlight Soil Temperature Rainfall Atmosphere
Edaphic factors Soil type Soil pH Soil temperature Oxygen content Water content Mineral content
Biotic factors Living factors or organisms that affect organisms in a necosystem
3 biotic factors Parasites Competitors Predators
Primary source of energy for organisms in an ecosystem The sun
Producer Green plants Trap sunlight during photosynthesis and use the energy to make glucose (Photosynthetic autotrophs)
Primary consumer Feeds on consumer
Secondary consumer feeds on primary consumer
Decomposers consumer Breakdown dead plants and animals
Detritus feeders Eat dead plants and animals
Food chain A feeding relationship with a Sequence of organisms showing the transfer of energy from on to the next
Grazing food chain Starts with a live producer
Food web Two or more interlinked food chains
Energy flow in an ecosystem Only about 10% of energy is passed from one tropic level to the next
Trophic Feeding or nutrition
Trophic level Feeding level of an organism in a food chain
Pyramid of numbers Shows the number of organisms at each Trophic level in a food chain
One problem associated with pyramid of numbers Distorted / funny shaped pyramids can occur when the producer is large
Example of a distorted pyramid of numbers Oak tree -> greenfly -> blue tits-> sparrow hawk
Niche The role of an organism in its habitat
Reasons why the number of individuals in a population might decrease High number of predators Disease Lack of food Emigration
Three reasons why population may increase Lack of predators High reproductive rate Plenty of food

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
