Energy & Resource 2

6th Grade Science: Unit 8 - Renewable vs. Non-Renewable Resources

QuestionAnswer
What is the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources? renewable resources can be replaced.
What are the main two types of nonrenewable resources? fossil fuels and nuclear fuels.
How does fossil fuel form? Remains of organisms.
What kind of energy can fossil fuels convert to? Electricity.
Why are fossil fuels the most common? They are inexpensive.
What are the two kinds of nuclear reactions? Fusion and fission.
What kind do nuclear power do plants use today? fission.
What renewable resource uses organic material? Bioenergy.
Which renewable resource uses heat within the Earth? Geothermal energy.
What is the most common nuclear fuel? Uranium.
What are the three main types of fossil fuels? petroleum, natural gas and coal.
What do petroleum and natural gas come from? Marine organisms.
What does coal come from? Plants remains.
What are petroleum fuels mainly used for? Ink, gum, and plastic.
What is natural gas used for? Cooking.
What are nuclear fuels used for? Large amount of energy.
What is an advantage of using nuclear fuel? No fuel is burned.
What is a disadvantage of using nuclear fuel? Produces nuclear waste.
What is an advantage of using fossil fuel? Inexpensive.
What is a disadvantage of using fossil fuel? Acid rain.
What is produced when fossil fuels pollute the air? Carbon dioxide.
What is a nonrenewable energy resource formed from the remains of plants and animals Fossil fuels.
Which renewable resource is most affected by cloud cover? solar energy
Describe 3 ways to conserve renewable resources. 1) reduce consumption 2) recycled materials 3) use alternative energy sources
What are the two main sources of renewable energy? Sun and Earth.
What two things does the sun’s energy produce? Light and heat
What are the two sources that energy comes from the Earth? Decay of radioactive elements and fission
What renewable energy might become a nonrenewable resource? Earth's heat.
What type of energy is produced by wind? Wind energy.
What are three disadvantages of using wind turbines? Not all places have wind, expensive, and pollution.
What species is effected by wind power? bats
What is electrical energy produced by water called? Hydroelectricity
What is are two disadvantages of hydroelectric energy? Water cannot rain and water evaporation.
What renewable resource uses falling water? Hydropower.
What two things can solar energy provide? Heat and sunlight.
What pollution is produced by solar energy? Heat pollution.
Where do solar heating systems work best? House/solar panels.
What is the first step to produce electricity from solar panels? Rays of sunlight strike a panel
What type of cell is absorbed by the sun to produce electricity? Photovoltaic
What is biomass? Organic matter from a plant Organismal waste.
What are the sources of biomass? Trees, crops and animal waste.
What is an advantage of using biomass? Inexpensive.
Biomass produces a liquid fuel called what and what food that we eat can make this liquid fuel? Peat.
What is geothermal energy? a Geyser.
What is geothermal energy used for? Heat energy.
What are the disadvantages of geothermal energy? Could break rocks.
Do different types of fuels cause different types of energy? Yes.
Are energy sources unlimited? Explain why or why not. No.
Why are renewable energy sources important for Earth’s future? Because fossil fuels are not going to be around forever.
What are some impacts on the planet of our energy use? It can kill them.
Do renewable energy sources have little or no impact, compared to non-renewable sources? Renewable has no impact but non renewable has an impact.
Describe 3 ways to reduce the use of nonrenewable resources. 1) Reduce 2) Reuse 3) Recycle
